Delta History
In 1913, twenty-two illustrious women had a vision. Driven to make a change in the perceptions of African Americans and women, these strong young ladies became the foundation of an esteemed sisterhood. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded January 13, 1913, on the campus of Howard University. In March of 1913, on a mission to serve the public and advance the female gender, the first official activity of the Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta was undertaken. Our Founders participated in the Women's Suffrage March in Washington, D.C. As the sorority grew, Delta Sigma Theta sought incorporation. On February 18, 1930, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was born.
Today, as a private, non-profit organization, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated thrives on providing services and programs that will improve human welfare around the globe. With over 200,000 members and more than 900 chapters, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated has members not only in the United States, but also in Japan, Germany, Bermuda, Liberia, the Virgin Islands, and more. The most important guide that women of Delta have for helping in our communities is the Five-Point Programmatic Thrust that outlines our service and actions within society. This Five-Point Thrust consists of Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health and Political Awareness and Involvement. In addition to the Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, the goals and principles established by our Founders still serve as guidance for the 200,000+ members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
